Blending an expansive field of view with unmistakable fisheye character, the Canon RF 7–14mm f/2.8–3.5 L Fisheye STM is an ultra-wide zoom designed for bold, eye-catching photo and video work. As the first fisheye lens in the RF lineup, it delivers an enormous 190° angle of view and offers both circular and diagonal fisheye coverage depending on focal length and camera format. Thoughtful design updates make working with this specialized optic more intuitive than ever.

Distinctive Fisheye Rendering and Image Quality

This ultra-wide fisheye produces dramatic distortion and exaggerated perspective, making it ideal for action sports, fast-moving subjects, and immersive visual storytelling. It also shines in landscape, nature, underwater, astrophotography, and architectural applications where a unique sense of space is desired.

The optical construction features five ultra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements to maintain strong sharpness, accurate color, and a relatively compact form factor. Canon’s Air Sphere (ASC) and Super Spectra (SSC) coatings help suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and clarity.

Versatile Zoom Design

Unlike conventional zoom lenses, changes in focal length on this fisheye directly influence both distortion and image coverage.

At 7mm on a full-frame camera, the lens functions as a fully circular fisheye with a 190° angle of view. Zoomed to 14mm, it becomes a diagonal, frame-filling fisheye offering a 180° angle of view.

When mounted on APS-C cameras, a dedicated “C” mark on the zoom ring at approximately 8.7mm indicates the point where the image circle fully covers the sensor and vignetting disappears. Between 7mm and 8.7mm, the image remains circular but does not completely fill the frame, resulting in visible vignetting.

Close-Focus Creative Possibilities

Taking full advantage of fisheye characteristics, close-up shooting dramatically emphasizes distortion and spatial depth. With a minimum focusing distance of just 5.9″—roughly 2″ from the front element—you can position the lens extremely close to subjects, exaggerating textures and shapes while the background curves away in classic fisheye fashion.

Built for Hybrid Photo and Video Creation

The fisheye effect is equally compelling for video, offering deep depth of field, sweeping angles, and striking distortion that place subjects within a highly immersive space.

Uncommon for fisheye lenses with a bulbous front element, this lens supports Canon’s rear drop-in filter system, enabling use of optional variable ND filters for better exposure control during video recording. Focus breathing is virtually eliminated thanks to a rear focusing design, ensuring consistent framing during focus pulls. Internal focusing and internal zoom further improve balance and usability on gimbals.

A lead-screw-type STM paired with position-detecting sensor technology derived from Nano USM provides fast, accurate autofocus for stills, along with smooth, quiet performance optimized for video. The lens is also suitable for 2D monoscopic VR capture and is fully supported by the Canon EOS VR System application.

Design and Handling

Compact for its class, the lens measures approximately 4.3″ in length and weighs just over 1 lb. A removable EW-76 petal-style lens hood is included, extending the total length to 5.2″ when attached. The hood cannot be reversed for storage, and when used on full-frame cameras, vignetting will appear at focal lengths shorter than 14mm. On APS-C cameras, no vignetting occurs between 8.7mm and 14mm.

A customizable Control Ring and Lens Function Button allow quick access to frequently used settings. The Zoom Limit/Lock switch enables consistent framing or secures the zoom during transport. As an L-series lens, it features robust weather sealing, and the fluorine-coated front element resists water, oil, and smudges for easier cleaning.

Innovative Drop-In Filter System

A standout feature of this lens is Canon’s rear drop-in filter design, originally introduced with the Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF–EOS R. This system accommodates the protruding front element while allowing filters to be changed without removing the lens from the camera.

Self-contained mounted filters slide directly into the rear of the lens. A clear filter is included, with optional Drop-In Variable ND Filter A and Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter A available separately, expanding creative control in both photo and video workflows.
